Just beyond the frenzy of a major expressway in Austin, Texas lies a modern-day retreat. Chinmaya Mission combines traditional Indian typologies, the financial constraints of a non-profit, and the powerful imagination of Miró Rivera Architects.
The design team harnessed the simple yet refined properties of timber, steel, and stone to complete the first phase of the mission: a temple and education building. Of special note at the temple is the striated composition of the roof panels crowned with a steeple fabricated from galvanized piping. The education building, 12 classrooms poised around a central gallery and flanked by a large covered patio, provides a hub for teaching the ancient heritage of Hindu spirituality.
