Browning Hanger at Mueller

Project Details

In 1945, the United States was at war, and metal was scarce. As a result, the Browning Aviation Hangar at Robert Mueller Airport was built with glued-laminated timber arches, constructed of native Southern Pine lumber. The arches were fabricated on site and erected as classic three-hinged arches, spanning 132 feet. Over the years, the hangar suffered considerable deterioration and neglect. The arches sagged, and termites invaded. As the result of a sensitive repair and upgrade, the Browning Hangar was rescued and made ready for a new tenant in the redevelopment of the former Mueller Airport site.
