Westcave Preserve

Project Details

The Warren Skaaren Environmental Learning Center at Westcave Preserve sets a high standard for environmentally sensitive building construction, providing valuable lessons in conscientious design, detailing, and selection of materials. The building serves both as a pleasing learning environment and as an integral component of the educational installation.

The primary roof structure is comprised of a series of light, open steel trusses supported on native limestone pilasters. Seamless integration of structure and architecture is the result of a successful combination of modern design and sustainable practice. This led the American Institute of Architects’ Committee on the Environment (AIA/COTE) to recognize the Warren Skaaren Learning Center with a national award as a “Top Ten Green Building Project” in 2006.
